Story by Lauren Montgomery of Find Healthy Living: Tuesday, October 11th was the first ever NYC Underground Yoga event. This two hour Jivamukti style yoga class was taught by Rima Rani Rabbath and sponsored by TumericALIVE, Well Fed NYC, Lululemon Athletica and Love Grace Foods.
Jivamukti has a very specific approach to yoga as a means to enlightenment and it has had a strong following internationally for almost 20 years. The beautiful practice inspires self-reflection and setting intentions. It’s is not just yoga for exercise and stress relief – but those are excellent benefits as well! One of the goals of this event was to raise funds for The LowLine: a project intending to transform an abandoned, underground trolley terminal in the Lower East Side into a green space for the public to enjoy like any other outdoor park. It will utilize solar technology to light this below street level area with natural sunlight.
Upon arriving well in advance to the event location at the famous Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts center, there was a buzzing line already forming for this much-anticipated event. Everyone seemed to know we were in for an extraordinary experience. Friends and yogis greeted each other on Norfolk Street where the energy was palpable even before stepping foot into the magical interior.
The main room of the building, a former Neo-Gothic Jewish Synagogue turned arts foundation space, was lit with angelic bright blue hues. At that moment I knew my first Jivamukti class would be nothing short of spectacular – and I was right. The very intense but uplifting class was taught by the beloved Lululemon ambassador and Advanced Jivamukti teacher Rima Rabbath, whose warmth and spirit were contagious. In addition to her excellent instruction, there were several other teachers spread throughout the room who did an incredible job of adjusting and challenging each individual. This gave the class a very personal feel in a crowd of over 200 people.
The meditative beats of DJ Sasha helped transform this intimate space. His music, so powerful and resonating throughout the room, seemed to give the yoga movements more flow and every posture more meaning. Together Rima and Sasha harmoniously created the most magical class I have and quite possibly will ever take. After the class, refreshing Love Grace juices were served and everyone went home with their complimentary Lululemon yoga mat, hopeful that this was just the beginning of more Underground Yoga events to come.
My introduction to Jivamukti yoga was a physically challenging and spiritually uplifting one that I would highly recommend to others! Rima teaches at the Jivamukti Yoga School in Union Square along with other wonderful teachers that cater to all levels of experience. Classes are offered almost every hour, seven days a week. Make sure to visit the gift shop and cafe – some of the most delicious vegan food in town is served there!
