The Benefits of Eating Locally Grown Food

TumericAlive purchases as many ingredients as possible from local farms as well as family-owner organic farms. As the weather gets warmer, growing season is about to start and farmers’ markets will be opening again to sell their produce. There are many benefits to eating locally grown food.

l.   Environmental Benefits

What you eat can positively or negatively affect your environment. In order to reach you, most food needs to travel thousands of miles. These miles are called “food miles” and negatively affect the environment. Transportation costs include fuel emissions. Locally grown food has a much smaller carbon footprint. In order to travel those distances, produce needs extra heavier packaging, which creates more waste. Preservatives are also needed to keep the food fresh. Local food has a much smaller distance to travel to reach your plate. By supporting local farms, you are also supporting the maintenance of farmland and greenspace in your community.

2.  Health Benefits

Nutritional value quickly declines after harvesting. Ripe seasonal foods have a higher nutritional content than unripe, out of season produce. Seasonal foods also support the bodies’ natural cleansing rhythm.

Locally grown food markets are also a safer food supply. The less steps involved between the produce and your plate, the less chances there are of contamination. Food that is shipped long distances has various locations which are involved in washing, shipping, and distribution.

 3.   It just tastes better

Locally grown produce is allowed to ripen on the vine. Produce that needs to be shipped long distances is harvested while still unripe and ripened along the way with the help of chemicals. Produce that is naturally ripened has a better texture and flavor.

4.   Economic Benefits

You can improve your local economy! By purchasing from local growers, you keep your food dollars circulating in the local area. There are also many new business opportunities that emerge in food production, distribution and processing.

5.  Sustainable Benefits

Local farmers need to grow their produce in the most sustainable way possible. They do not have the choice that larger corporations have to abuse their land. Small local farmers need to rotate crops to increase soil fertility and use sustainable composting methods to get rid of waste.

6.   Community Benefits

There are stronger producer-consumer relations that emerge when purchasing locally grown food. The consumer can learn directly how their food was grown and processed. You are able to know where your food comes from and who grows it. Farmers’ markets, community gardens and other outlets for locally grown food often create a social arena for the community to gather, bond and learn.

Since growing season is started, think about all the ways you can incorporate locally grown food in your diet! TumericAlive is one way to support local farms. Try to find out which grocery stores in your neighborhood stock locally grown produce. Give yourself a locally grown food challenge: have at least 20% of your produce come from local farms.
