Turmeric: Where The Wild Plants Grow

  • Turmeric is a short plant whose fleshy creeping roots (also known as rhizomes) are cured, steamed, or boiled and then dried in the sun for use in a variety of applications.

  • Turmeric can live for more than 2 years but is ready to harvest in 7 to 9 months.

  • Turmeric requires a large amount of annual rainfall and lives most comfortably at around 68-86 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Turmeric’s leaf sheaths form a false stem that rarely reaches more than 1 meter (or 3.28 feet) high and perches up a beautiful flower.

Turmeric: International Origins

  • Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and like ginger it is a tropical plant.

  • Its origins are said to have started in India and in modern times it is harvested widely in the tropics like Australia, Sri Lanka, India, China, the Himalayas and Hawaii.

  • Temple Turmeric’s organic, non-GMO, proprietary varietal of turmeric, Hawaiian Oana Turmeric, is grown in Hawaii.

Turmeric: Known by Many Names

  • Turmeric is also known as curcuma, haridrā (Sanskrit), yu jin (in Chinese), haldi (in Hindi) and geelwortel (in dutch).

  • How do you pronounce turmeric? Turmeric can be pronounced with or without the initial “r.” Many people pronounce it as if it were spelled “tu-mer-ic.” This is a result of a linguistic phenomenon known as dissimilation whereby two “r”s close to each other are made easier to say by dropping one from the pronunciation. This also happens with “February” for example.

Turmeric: Its Enhancing Power

  • Curcumin is the active component in turmeric.

  • In Ayurveda, an ancient healing practice, turmeric is used to enhance digestive respiratory and circulatory functions in the body.

  • Turmeric is also believed to provide balance within the body.

  • In modern medicine, turmeric is being studied for its positive effects on inflammation response.
