10 Things to Eat Daily for Positive Inflamamtion and Balanced Health | Temple Turmeric

Having eaten close to 100% organic since 2001, I am incredibly serious about what I put into my body. As such, I do not eat simply to fill my stomach. Instead, I seek to feed my body the best nutrition it can get.

I view food as medicine and will do everything I can to give myself the absolute best medicine in the world.

10 Things I Eat Weekly for Food As Medicine

Here are 10 organic foods that I consume each week and an explanation as to why I include them in my diet.

 

Coconut Oil

I am a huge fan of coconut oil and love to use a tablespoon of it in my morning smoothie. Among many other things, coconut oil contains lauric acid, which converts to monolaurin when in the body. Monolaurin helps to support our immune system.

Fun Fact: I also use coconut oil as a moisturizer on my face.

 

Turmeric

As one of the great inflammation balancing foods on the planet, turmeric is a must in my diet. One of the active compounds in turmeric is curcumin, which has been shown to be very effective in balancing mood.

And as someone who was on Prozac for nearly 11 years, I understand the importance of specific foods to maintain my emotional well-being. Turmeric is one of these foods, and I usually have a turmeric juice.

 

Sauerkraut 

I am kind of obsessed with sauerkraut and almost never will my fridge not have a jar of it in there.

Sauerkraut is a fermented food and provides the body with beneficial bacteria, which is vital for good gut health.

 

Sprouts

A true superfood, sprouts contain very high levels of enzymes and nutrients, and assimilate very easily in the body. My preference is broccoli sprouts, which contain sulforaphane and I love putting them in my green juice.

A study at Johns Hopkins University, found that 3-day old broccoli sprouts consistently contained 20 to 50 times the amount of chemoprotective compounds than those found in mature broccoli heads.

 

Medicinal Mushrooms

Nope, these are not hallucinogenic mushrooms – this is actually something good for the body.

Medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi, chaga, and cordyceps, were named one of my Top 5 Organic Food Trends of 2014 and are an excellent for energy and stamina. They’re also immune balancing.

A scoop of medicinal mushroom powder in my morning smoothie is a must.

 

Quinoa

Rich in protein and containing all nine essential amino acids, quinoa is a source of manganese, magnesium, folate, and phosphorus.

I eat quinoa about 3 times per week and love to top it with avocado, sauerkraut and black sesame seeds.

 

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds seem to be everywhere these days, including my kitchen, and they are the perfect travel food.

Chia seeds are an incredible source of protein, omega 3-s, and fiber, and they are the main ingredient in my chia seed puddings. A fantastic way to start the day!

 

Cacao Powder

According to various pieces of research that I’ve seen, cacao may contain the highest amount of antioxidants of any food in the world.

I’ll consume it in a piece of raw chocolate or as powder in my smoothie.

 

Beet Kvass

Yes, another fermented food product. I can’t get enough of these!

A lacto-fermented beverage of Russian origin, beet kvass provides the body with beneficial bacteria and aids in digestion. It is also touted as a blood purifier and a way to cleanse the liver.

I drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

 

Cucumbers

Another inflammation balancing food, cucumbers are also excellent for the skin. One of my favorite juice combinations is cucumbers and mint. So delicious!
