It’s getting to be about that time of the year where I find myself running away from strangers who cough in public and dread confined spaces like the subway and small offices. People are getting sick and seem more than willing to share those germs and spread the love. Runny noses, scratchy throats are not cool and are the best way to get in the way of professional and personal lives while making it really hard to breathe deep during that yoga class. As it gets colder and we head into the daunting East Coast winter, make it a priority to naturally boost your immune system, and hopefully avoid alienating yourself to the sick room.

Look into your fridge for healing rather than your medicine cabinet and see how much better you feel. Turmeric and ginger are two of the best herbs to help improve the function of the immune system. Rather than simply rely on blind luck and hope for the best, make an effort to get more rest, eat your greens and sweat it out. Studies show that avoiding processed food and reducing stress can restore your immune system to optimal functioning.

Turmeric, the ingredient of choice in our elixir contains curcumin, which is hailed for its antioxidant properties, antibacterial properties, stimulates our adrenal glands and has even been found to actually help rebuild the immune system. Ginger, its cousin and the other half of this power couple has been shown to reduce inflammation and be a powerful decongestion. The powers of these herbs are only enhanced when combined with a spice like cayenne or black pepper.

Here is a Turmeric Ginger Lemonade from to start your days with an extra boost.

Turmeric Ginger Lemonade
• Juice of 1 whole lemon
• 2-3 inches of fresh ginger, ginger juice or 1 heaping tbsp powdered ginger
• 1-2 tsp organic turmeric
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ½ tsp clove in powder
• 2 tbsp raw honey
• Pinch of cayenne
Steep everything in hot water and sip throughout the day. This will warm you from the inside out! Seriously, avoid the cold, strep throat and disruptive coughs by taking extra time to take care of yourself and drink as much TumericALIVE as you want to feel good all season long.
